ELGIN FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Hamilton and Associates worked closely with the congregation of Elgin First Presbyterian Church to restore the historic character of the landmark building while simultaneously meeting the congregation's need for a sheltered entry, covered outdoor space and wheelchair access to the sanctuary.
An earlier remodeling had enclosed the open steeple tower with historically inappropriate vertical panel board and altered the balance of the facade by visually deleting the moldings with a blanket of white pant.
The redesign and restoration of the steeple tower maintains the functionality of the enclosed space while reestablishing the stylistically appropriate pointed arches. A historically sensitive front covered entry porch blends with the original design and provides the congregation with a sheltered space for entry, exit and communal interaction.
Updated paint colors rebalance the building's proportions by emphasizing the historical moldings and details. The back covered patio provides a sheltered outdoor gathering space with wheelchair access to the sanctuary via accessible ramps.
